Unity too slow for laptop with my specs

I purchased a high-end (at least to some extent) laptop (Lenovo Essentials
g505s) recently, installed Ubuntu on it. The animation speeds, fade in,
fade out, minimize into launcher are too slow [2-3 seconds], sometimes in
unity dash there is a considerable lag in typing, even in moving windows
there is a noticeable lag. With a quad-core processor and suffice RAM I do
expect it to perform better.
Can this be a problem with my graphic card? I don't know if it is working
well with Linux. Also, I did notice that the problem is more when I am
using Ubuntu Software center
Update: The output of lspci | grep vga is blank.
